21 August 2019 - Oh dear...

Right, we need to remove the fuel tank before we can fix the boot floor. Which means removing the tank straps.

Funny you mention the straps...

Image

Undoing them involved cutting the threaded part off, then using a bolt grip on the nut while someone held the strap with pliers. Came off more easily than the state of them would lead you to believe. Although, getting the straps off the hooks was somewhat more difficult and involved lots of hammering.

I think Mr MOT chap wouldn't have been too happy about them!

With the tank out of the way, I can have a better dig around.

This is the damage so far in the off side corner.

Do we patch it? Or replace the holes with sections from another car?

It's a sunny day and I've just been out for a look under the car......

Yuk. Just holes and holes and rust and holes :(

We decided to remove the rear bumper to gain better access and to do something about the brackets. They are a wee bit cream crackered..

Image

They were never going to come undone...

Image

Cream crackers? More like water biscuits, actually...

Image

The bumper itself isn't looking too clever either...

And the holes! Oh god the holes!! Cue 'Our Tune' theme music...

If we'd started at the back, I don't think we would have continued. It's looking like a bigger job than the front and it's all a bit disheartening :(

Going to need a replacement bumper as well as a boot floor. The floor may well end up being patched though.

...

Having slept on it (just call me "Rip van Winkle"), I have a plan B. Watch this space...
